Bauhaus Chess set

Designed by Josef Hartwig, a master craftsman at the Bauhaus School from 1921 to 1925.

The form of each piece matches their chess function.

It has been described as describes it as a "completely coherent and functional symbolic system", that transcends the national, cultural, ethnic and religious particularities on which previous chess sets had been based.

The eight cubes of the Third Froebel gift become the pawns.

A set manufacured from Pear wood at Bauhaus in 1924 is the MoMA collection

Children who play chess develop the ability to concentrate for extended periods, think ahead and solve problems. They learn to win and loose graciously.
