Friedrich Froebel watched children and noticed how they delight in the quick alternation of building up and tearing down, of uniting and separating. He designed the blocks of these building gifts so that children could easily pull them apart and put them together in many different ways.
The box is raised to reveal a cube, which a child can easily pull part to discover eight, identical, smaller cubes.

The cube can be halved in three ways. There are four blocks in each half.
|
Each half can be divided into two columns. There are two blocks in each column.
